I have an aversion to produce unnecessary code. I must have a very strong reason to write a program or a tool. In the last few years I have only had two reasons, so I have developed two tools in BASH.
Both are based on a similar idea, easily grab RSS blog feed (RSSPodder) or audio podcast content (CatchPodder) from command-line (aka via SSH connection). Both are in the production phase and I use them on weekly basis. See details on my GitHub.
Of course, pet project for testing concepts or learning purposes is another story. But I don’t consider them as “projects”.
I think developers, in general, should focus more on collaborations with others that “invents” their own “standards” or “projects”. XKCD #927 is a great illustration of this :-)
